Portrait of Princess Alice
Portrait of Princess Alice Maud Mary (1843-1878), Grand Duchess of Hesse, third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Alice married Grand Duke Louis of Hesse in 1862 and had seven children. Among them were Alexandra, who became the wife of Tsar Nicholas II and Victoria, who married Prince Louis of Battenberg and was the grandmother of the present Duke of Edinburgh. Alices life was etched with tragedy. A natural nurse, she was by her father, Prince Alberts side, when he died of typhoid on December 14th, 1861. One of her sons died falling from a bedroom window in 1873 and her youngest daughter died of diptheria in 1878. It was while Alice was nursing her children through this that she herself caught diptheria and died at the age of just 34, seventeen years to the day of her fathers death

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant portrait captures the young and radiant face of Princess Alice Maud Mary, Grand Duchess of Hesse, the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Born in 1843, Alice's life was marked by both royal lineage and personal tragedy. In 1862, she married Grand Duke Louis of Hesse and went on to have seven children, including Tsarina Alexandra of Russia, who became the wife of Tsar Nicholas II, and Princess Victoria of Battenberg, who married Prince Louis of Battenberg and was the grandmother of the present Duke of Edinburgh. Tragedy struck early in Alice's life when she was by her father's side during his fatal illness from typhoid on December 14, 1861. Her grief was compounded when one of her sons fell from a bedroom window in 1873, and her youngest daughter died of diphtheria in 1878. It was during the nursing of her children through their own illnesses that Alice herself caught diphtheria and died at the young age of 34, seventeen years to the day of her father's death. This portrait, taken in the late 1860s, captures the natural warmth and nurturing spirit of Princess Alice, a fitting testament to her role as a devoted mother and wife. The image is a poignant reminder of the personal tragedies that often accompany the public lives of royal figures, and the enduring legacy of the Victorian era.
