The Persian Empire, led by King Xerxes I, had recently suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of Thermopylae, where a small Greek force, led by King Leonidas of Sparta, held off the vast Persian army for several days. In an attempt to weaken the Greek resistance, Mardonius believed that dividing their ranks would be a strategic advantage. The Athenians, however, were steadfast in their resolve and refused to entertain the Persian proposal. The delegation, dressed in fine Persian robes and bearing elaborate gifts, stands before the Athenian assembly, their expressions revealing a mixture of hope and frustration.
