EDITORS COMMENTS
The Burning of the Normandie: A Historic Maritime Tragedy The Normandie, once the largest liner in the world, met an unfortunate end on March 23, 1942. With the onset of World War II, the decision was made to convert this magnificent vessel into a U.S. naval auxiliary. As work began on the conversion, disaster struck. A fire broke out on board, and the blaze was fierce and unrelenting, lasting for five hours. Thousands of tonnes of water were poured into the Normandie in an attempt to extinguish the flames. The fire was eventually brought under control, but as the tide came in, the ship began to roll over onto her side. The weight of the water pulled the Normandie down, marking the end of this historic vessel. The damage to the Normandie was estimated to be a staggering $1,250,000. This tragic event marked a significant moment in maritime history, as the once-proud luxury liner was reduced to a watery grave. The cause of the fire was never definitively determined, but the incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the risks associated with naval conversions. This photograph captures the Normandie in her final moments, engulfed in flames and listing heavily to one side. The image is a poignant reminder of the grandeur and majesty of this iconic ship, and the sad fate that befell her.
