EDITORS COMMENTS
New Sessions House, Central Criminal Court, London (c. 1910): A Historic Symbol of Justice This photograph captures the grandeur and historical significance of the New Sessions House, also known as the Central Criminal Court, located in Old Bailey, London. Built between 1825 and 1834, this iconic edifice has stood as a symbol of justice and the British legal system for over 190 years. The image, taken around 1910, showcases the impressive neoclassical architecture of the building, with its grand columns, intricate carvings, and ornate details. The Old Bailey, the street where the court is situated, is named after the medieval fortress that once stood there, Bailey of Old Bailey, and has been the site of London's criminal courts since the late 17th century. The New Sessions House was designed by architects John Soane and Sir Charles Barry to replace the old court buildings, which had become inadequate and cramped. The new court was built to accommodate larger trials and provide more space for the increasing number of cases. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when justice was administered in a very different way. The Old Bailey sessions were open to the public, and the courtroom was often filled with spectators eager to witness the proceedings. The image also serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of the legal system and the role it plays in shaping society. Today, the Central Criminal Court continues to serve as a vital part of the British justice system, hosting high-profile trials and upholding the principles of fairness, impartiality, and the rule of law. This photograph is not only a beautiful work of art but also a testament to the rich history and enduring legacy of the New Sessions House and the Old Bailey.
