The historical significance of this event marked the final chapter of the Expedition of the Thousand, a pivotal turning point in Italian Unification. General Garibaldi, leading the volunteer army known as the "Thousand," had landed in Marsala, Sicily, in May 1860, sparking a series of battles against the Bourbon forces. The fall of Palermo in late October 1860 left Messina as the last major stronghold for the Neapolitan forces in Sicily.
