EDITORS COMMENTS
Messina Evacuated: General Fergola Commanding the Remaining Neapolitan Forces in Sicily (1860) This evocative image captures the moment of departure for General Fergola and the last remnants of the Neapolitan forces from the forts of Messina, Sicily, in January 1860. The historical significance of this event marked the final chapter of the Expedition of the Thousand, a pivotal turning point in Italian Unification. General Garibaldi, leading the volunteer army known as the "Thousand," had landed in Marsala, Sicily, in May 1860, sparking a series of battles against the Bourbon forces. The fall of Palermo in late October 1860 left Messina as the last major stronghold for the Neapolitan forces in Sicily. In this photograph, General Fergola, the commander of the Neapolitan forces in Messina, is seen giving orders to his troops as they prepare to embark on ships, signaling the end of their resistance. The image conveys a sense of determination and resolve, as the soldiers, many with their weapons slung over their shoulders, march towards their boats, ready to face an uncertain future. The historical backdrop of this event is marked by the Italian Risorgimento, a period of political upheaval and national awakening that led to the unification of Italy. The fall of Messina was a crucial victory for the Italian unification movement, and this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and struggles that shaped the country's history. The photograph's composition, with the boats in the foreground and the fortress in the background, emphasizes the contrast between the security of the fortified position and the uncertainty of the journey ahead. The image also highlights the human element of the historical event, as individual soldiers are portrayed in their moment of departure, adding a personal touch to the larger narrative of Italian unification.
