This medallion print features the enigmatic figure of Friedrich Anton (Franz) Mesmer (1734-1815), a German physicist and pioneer in the exploration of magnetic and gravitational influences on health. Depicted in this historical image, Mesmer is shown with an altered appearance, including a voluminous wig that was fashionable during his time. Mesmer is best known for his groundbreaking work in the field of paranormal phenomena, particularly his theories on hypnosis and mesmerism. Mesmer's investigations into the mysterious forces of magnetism and gravity began in the late 18th century. He believed that these energies could be harnessed to cure various ailments and improve overall health. Mesmer's methods involved the use of magnets, iron rods, and a special tub filled with water, which he called a "bath." Patients would sit around the tub, and Mesmer would pass the rods over their bodies, supposedly transferring the healing energies to them. Despite skepticism from the scientific community, Mesmer's treatments gained popularity, and he attracted a devoted following. In fact, his methods were so successful that they even caught the attention of the French royal court. In 1784, Mesmer was invited to Paris to perform a demonstration of his healing powers for King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette.
