Marie de Brabant, born in 1321, was the second wife of Philippe III le Hardi, King of France. Daughter of Jean III, Duke of Brabant, Marie brought significant political alliances to the French royal court through her lineage. Her marriage to Philippe III, which took place in 1347, was an essential step in the ongoing power struggle between the French and the English monarchies. Philippe III, also known as Philippe the Bold, was the eldest son of King John II of France and the grandson of Philip VI. He was a key figure in the Hundred Years War, which pitted the French and English monarchies against each other for control of the French throne. Marie's connection to the Duchy of Brabant provided Philippe with valuable diplomatic leverage.
