This evocative photograph captures the proud and determined expression of members of the 6th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment, as they stand in formation during the early 20th century. Established in 1860, the Manchester Regiment was an infantry regiment of the British Army with a rich and storied history. The regiment saw action in various conflicts throughout its existence, including the Second Boer War and both World Wars. The 6th Battalion, also known as the "Volunteer" or "Territorial" Battalion, was formed in 1859 as part of the volunteer movement. Unlike the regular army, volunteers served part-time and were often drawn from the local community. This close connection to Manchester and its people is reflected in the yellow facings, or lace, on the collars and cuffs of their uniforms, which set them apart from other battalions in the regiment.
