This powerful and evocative image captures the chaos and destruction of the Lucerne Street Fight, an unfortunate turning point in Swiss history that marked the beginning of a civil war in 1845. The dispute that ignited this violent confrontation was rooted in deep-seated religious and social tensions that had long simmered beneath the surface in this picturesque Swiss city. The Free Corps, a militia made up of conservative and ultramontane Catholics, had grown increasingly agitated by the liberal and secular reforms being advocated by the Protestant-dominated government. As tensions escalated, a heated argument between members of the two factions on the streets of Lucerne led to a violent clash.
