EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the Hollenau Locks on the Kiel Canal in Germany, taken around 1920. The Kiel Canal is a vital waterway that links the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, allowing large ships to bypass the dangerous and time-consuming journey around the Jutland Peninsula. The Hollenau Locks, located near the city of Kiel, are a key component of the canal system. Constructed between 1887 and 1895, the Kiel Canal was a marvel of engineering at the time, and this image showcases the intricate workings of the lock system. The lock gates are raised, revealing the water levels on either side of the gate, allowing the passage of boats from one body of water to the other. The lock chamber, filled with water, is visible in the background, with the canal stretching out in both directions. The history of the Kiel Canal is rich and varied. It played a significant role in both World Wars, with the canal being closed during the First World War and used as a strategic military objective during the Second World War. Today, the canal is an essential transportation route for both commercial and recreational vessels, connecting the North and Baltic Seas and facilitating trade and travel between Europe's northern and western regions. This photograph provides a glimpse into the past, showcasing the engineering prowess and historical significance of the Hollenau Locks on the Kiel Canal. The image captures the beauty and complexity of the lock system, a testament to the ingenuity and determination of those who built it over a century ago.
