This historic photograph captures the moment when Charles Lindbergh, the daring aviator, was welcomed as a hero in New York City on May 21, 1927. After making history by completing the first solo nonstop transatlantic flight from Long Island, New York to Le Bourget Field in Paris, France, Lindbergh's return to the United States was met with an outpouring of enthusiasm and celebration. As the plane carrying Lindbergh and his copilot, John Oxnard, approached New York Harbor, a fleet of ships and boats formed a flotilla to greet them. Throngs of people lined the streets of Manhattan, waving flags and cheering as the pair flew overhead in a small plane. Upon landing at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, Lindbergh was met by Mayor Jimmy Walker and a large crowd of eager fans. The aviator was then transported to City Hall in an open car, where he was presented with the keys to the city. The celebration continued with a ticker-tape parade through the Canyon of Heroes, where an estimated two million people turned out to pay their respects and congratulations.
