EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, King George V (1865-1936) is seen leaving the home of the Marquess of Rosebery, Archibald Philip Primrose (1847-1929), after taking part as the godfather in the christening of Lord Rosebery's grandson, Lord Houghton (1911-1922). The future king is dressed in a smart morning suit and wears a top hat, while Lady Margaret Primrose (1873-1934), Lord Rosebery's daughter and Lord Houghton's mother, looks on from the porch. The christening took place in 1911, and the future heir to the throne is seen leaving the residence with a red carpet laid out before him, signifying the royal status of the occasion. Lord Houghton was the only son and heir of Lord Crewe (1858-1945) and his second wife, Lady Margaret Primrose. The christening marked an important moment in the lives of the Crewe family, as well as in the history of the British aristocracy. The image captures the grandeur and elegance of the time, with the dignified presence of King George V adding to the significance of the event. The photograph provides a glimpse into the past, offering a window into the world of royalty and aristocracy during the early 20th century. The intricate details of the clothing, the formal setting, and the dignified demeanor of those present all contribute to the historical significance of the image. This photograph is a testament to the rich history and traditions of the British monarchy and the aristocracy, and serves as a reminder of the important role that godfathers play in the lives of their godchildren.
