King Edward I, also known as Edward Longshanks or the Hammer of the Scots, is depicted in this engraving holding his sword with an air of regal authority. The decorative border surrounding the image showcases significant events from his reign, which took place between 1272 and 1307. Born in 1239, Edward was the eldest son of Henry III and Eleanor of Provence. He ascended to the English throne at the age of 13 following his father's death. Edward's reign was marked by military campaigns in Wales and Scotland, as well as his efforts to consolidate English power in Gascony. The border of the engraving illustrates some of the most notable events from Edward's reign. The first scene shows Edward's investiture as Prince of Wales at Caernarvon Castle in 1267. The second scene depicts his victory over the Welsh at the Battle of Orewin Bridge in 1282. The third scene illustrates Edward's conquest of Scotland, which began in 1296 with the invasion of Scotland and the capture of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The final scene shows Edward's death in 1307, which occurred at Burgh-by-Sands in Cumbria. Edward I is shown here in his royal regalia, wearing a crown adorned with precious stones and a long, flowing robe. His expression is stern and determined, reflecting the military and political challenges he faced during his reign.
