HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, 1845

Engraving showing HMS Erebus (left) and HMS Terror, pictured on the River Thames, 1845. In 1845 the British Admiralty sent two polar exploration ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, to look for the Northwest passage round the northern coast of Canada. The expedition, commanded by Sir John Franklin, disappeared from view late in 1845 and none of the men were ever seen again. In fact the ships made it to the King William Island region, then got stuck in the ice. With supplies running out the surviving crew abandoned ship and headed south. However, none made it to safety and it is assumed all died from disease, exposure or starvation. From 1848 onwards a number of relief expeditions were sent to find Franklin, but it was only in 1859 that Francis Leopold McClintock was able to confirm Franklins fate

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical engraving captures a moment in time when the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror set sail on a fateful expedition in 1845. Led by Sir John Franklin, these two polar exploration ships were on a mission to find the elusive Northwest Passage along the northern coast of Canada. However, tragedy struck as the ships became trapped in ice near King William Island, leading to the demise of all crew members. The image shows the HMS Erebus on the left and HMS Terror on the right, peacefully floating on the River Thames before embarking on their ill-fated journey. Despite numerous relief expeditions sent out to search for Franklin and his men, it wasn't until 1859 that Francis Leopold McClintock confirmed their tragic fate. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by early explorers in their quest for discovery. The story of the doomed Franklin expedition has become an important chapter in maritime history, highlighting both bravery and sacrifice in pursuit of knowledge. The haunting image of these abandoned ships frozen in time evokes a sense of mystery and loss that continues to captivate audiences today.
