This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in Finnish history during the liberation of Finland from Russian rule in World War I. The image, taken in Helsinki in 1918, shows a column of German soldiers marching through the city streets, surrounded by curious onlookers. The First World War had seen Finland under the control of the Russian Empire, but as the tide of the war turned against Russia, Finland declared its independence in December 1917. The arrival of the Germans in Helsinki marked the beginning of the end for the Reds, who were forced to retreat to eastern Finland.
