EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print depicts the renowned American artist George Inness, captured in a portrait taken in 1894, the year before his death. Born on February 13, 1825, in Newburgh, New York, Inness is considered one of the leading figures of the Hudson River School, a mid-19th-century artistic movement that celebrated the natural beauty of the American landscape. Inness's artistic career spanned over six decades, during which he produced a diverse body of work that ranged from realistic landscapes to more impressionistic and symbolic compositions. His early works, such as "The Lackawanna Valley" (1855), reflect the influence of the Hudson River School and its focus on capturing the grandeur of the natural world. However, Inness's artistic style evolved over the years, and he became increasingly influenced by European Impressionism and the works of artists such as Claude Monet and Camille Corot. This is evident in later works such as "The Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" (1856), which features a lone figure standing atop a hill, gazing out at a misty landscape. Despite his growing reputation as a leading American artist, Inness faced financial difficulties throughout his career. He struggled to sell his works and relied on teaching and commissions to make ends meet. However, he continued to paint, driven by his passion for art and his desire to capture the beauty of the natural world. This print serves as a fitting tribute to Inness and his contributions to American art history. With his expressive brushstrokes and evocative use of light and color, he continues to inspire artists and art lovers alike, more than a century after his death.
