EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the stern yet resolute visage of General Sir Henry MacLeod Leslie Rundle, a prominent British Army commander during World War I. Born on March 24, 1856, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Rundle rose through the ranks of the British military to become a respected and formidable leader. He served in various capacities during the Second Boer War and was instrumental in planning the successful relief of Ladysmith in 1900. When World War I broke out, Rundle was appointed as the General Officer Commanding of the 1st Cavalry Division. He led his troops with great distinction in the early battles of the war, including the First Battle of Ypres and the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. In 1915, he was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath for his services in the field. Despite his successes, Rundle's military career was not without controversy. He was criticized for his handling of the Second Battle of Ypres, where his troops suffered heavy losses due to a German gas attack. Nevertheless, Rundle remained a respected figure in the British military and continued to serve in various capacities until his retirement in 1922. This photograph, taken during Rundle's tenure as General Officer Commanding, shows him in his military uniform, with a determined expression and piercing gaze. The image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and leadership that defined the World War I era. The historical significance of this photograph is further underscored by the fact that it is a rare and authentic print from the Mary Evans Picture Library, a trusted source for high-quality historical images.
