Friedrich II, also known as Friedrich the Great, was the King of Prussia from 1740 until his death in 1786. Born on January 24, 1712, in Berlin, Prussia, Friedrich was the eldest son of Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm and Sophia Dorothea of Hanover. This striking portrait of Friedrich II, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the monarch in his prime. The king is depicted in a formal attire, wearing a red military coat adorned with gold braid and a white cravat.
