Born in Paris in 1839, d'Hervilly was a poet, novelist, and dramatist whose works continue to intrigue scholars and readers alike. The image of d'Hervilly, with his piercing gaze and thoughtful expression, is reminiscent of the romantic poets who inspired him. He is depicted holding a lyre, an ancient musical instrument associated with the Muses and the art of poetry.
