This portrait captures the regal beauty and strength of Elizabeth Petrovna, Empress of Russia, as she gazes out with a confident and determined expression. Born in 1709 as Anna Ioannovna, she was the daughter of a German nobleman and was raised in the Russian court after being orphaned at a young age. In 1741, she ascended to the throne following the death of her half-brother, Emperor Ivan VI. Elizabeth's reign marked a significant period in Russian history, as she brought about a cultural and artistic renaissance, promoting European influences and patronizing the arts. Her personal style was also a reflection of this, as seen in this portrait where she dons a low-necked, off-the-shoulder toc, a popular fashion trend from France at the time. The intricate ringlets framing her face add to her allure, making her a striking and elegant figure. The Toc, or the French cap, was a popular headpiece during the 18th century, worn by both royalty and the aristocracy.
