The Italian composer Donizetti's three-act opera, based on Sir Walter Scott's novel "The Bride of Lammermoor," premiered in Naples in 1835, and its intense and passionate story quickly gained popularity throughout Europe. The opera's tragic plot revolves around the ill-fated love affair between Lucia and Edgardo, as well as Lucia's family's desire to marry her off to Arturo, the Duke of Northumberland.
