Dog from Jungfrau Railway Polar Dog Colony
The kennels of the Jungfrau Railway Polar Dog Colony are situated just below the Eiger Glacier moraine. The Greenland dogs have lived here for nearly one hundred years. Their numbers have continually varied over the years and currently number about 20 dogs of all ages. In comparison to the total number of Greenland dogs in Switzerland - which has now reached 55 - this comprises a substantial part of the national population. The dogs live in several packs of four to five animals as suited to the species. The construction of the kennels was tailor-made to withstand the extreme weather conditions of the high-Alpine world. The dogs have free access to sheltered huts and interiors as well as round-the-clock access to open-air runs in fenced-in enclosures. This form of kennelling has been awarded a special certificate by the Swiss kennel Club
