EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the deck of the Fram, the legendary exploratory vessel that carried Roald Amundsen and his team to the South Pole during their groundbreaking Antarctic Expedition of 1910-1912. The image, taken in 1912, shows the stern of the ship with its distinctive rounded shape, designed by Norwegian polar expert Colin Archer for the harsh polar conditions. In the foreground, some of the canine members of the expedition are visible, eagerly awaiting their next assignment. These strong and agile dogs were an essential component of the team, as they pulled the sledges laden with provisions and equipment over the icy terrain. Amundsen's team used a total of 52 dogs, as well as 16 sledges and 21 men, to make history as the first humans to reach the geographic South Pole. The unforgiving Antarctic landscape, with its towering icebergs and endless expanse of snow and ice, can be glimpsed in the background, adding to the sense of isolation and adventure. This powerful image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of daring exploration and human achievement.
