EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Daniel Dunglass Home, an influential figure in the history of spiritualism and mediumship, in the later years of his life. Born in Scotland in 1833, Home became renowned for his alleged ability to communicate with the spirits of the deceased, attracting both admirers and skeptics in equal measure. Home's career as a medium began in earnest in the 1850s, and he quickly gained a reputation for his seances, which often involved the production of ectoplasm - a substance believed to be the physical manifestation of spirits. These events were often accompanied by other phenomena, such as levitation and materializations, which added to the intrigue and controversy surrounding Home's abilities. Despite the skepticism of some, Home's fame spread, and he became a regular feature in the European and American social scenes of the time. He was even invited to the White House to perform a séance for President Rutherford B. Hayes and his wife. However, Home's reputation was not without its challenges. In 1865, he was exposed in a scandal involving the medium Florence Cook, who was revealed to be using trickery to produce ectoplasm. Home was accused of being complicit in the deception, and his career suffered as a result. Despite this setback, Home continued to practice mediumship, and this photograph, taken in 1886, shows him in later life, with a calm and introspective expression. The photograph serves as a reminder of the complex and intriguing history of spiritualism and mediumship, and the enduring fascination that these phenomena continue to hold for many people today.
