EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Cosima Wagner: A Musical and Cultural Icon of the 19th Century This evocative postcard image captures the enigmatic and captivating figure of Cosima Wagner (1837-1930), a central figure in the world of 19th-century music and culture. Cosima was the daughter of the legendary Hungarian composer Franz Liszt and the wife of two of the most influential figures in the history of Western classical music: Hans von Bülow and Richard Wagner. Born in 1837, Cosima's life was marked by a rich tapestry of musical and romantic relationships. Her father, Franz Liszt, was a towering figure in the musical world, known for his virtuosic piano playing and his innovative approach to music composition. Cosima's mother, the Countess Marie d'Agoult, was a French writer and journalist who had an affair with Liszt, resulting in Cosima's birth. In 1857, Cosima married Hans von Bülow, a renowned pianist and conductor. Their marriage was marked by a deep love and mutual respect, and Cosima played a crucial role in supporting Hans' career. However, their relationship was not without its challenges, including Hans' infidelity and Cosima's growing fascination with the music of Richard Wagner. In 1864, Cosima met Richard Wagner, who was then in exile in Switzerland. Despite being married to Hans, Cosima and Wagner began an intense and passionate affair, which ultimately led to the dissolution of her marriage with Hans. In 1870, Cosima and Wagner were married, and they went on to have six children together. Cosima played a vital role in Wagner's later years, managing his finances, organizing his festivals, and promoting his music. After Wagner's death in 1883, Cosima became a widow and continued to promote Wagner's music and legacy. This postcard image, taken in the 1930s, captures the profile of a woman who lived a remarkable life, filled with love, music, and historical significance.
