EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures Colonel Klobb, the esteemed chief administrator of Timbuktu, dressed in his military regalia. Colonel Klobb, born in the late 1850s, was a prominent figure in the final days of the Scramble for Africa, a period marked by intense European competition for colonial territories in Africa. In 1899, Colonel Klobb found himself in a heroic confrontation with the Voulet-Chanoine Mission, a French expedition led by Lieutenant-Commanders Voulet and Chanoine. The mission, which was notorious for its brutal tactics and disregard for local customs and sovereignty, had been making its way through the Sudan, causing destruction and chaos in its wake. When the Voulet-Chanoine Mission arrived in Timbuktu, they demanded that Colonel Klobb surrender the city to them. Klobb, who was committed to protecting the city and its people, refused. A fierce battle ensued, with the French mission using superior firepower to try and overpower the defenders of Timbuktu. Despite being vastly outnumbered and outgunned, Colonel Klobb and his men fought bravely, putting up a valiant resistance. Tragically, Colonel Klobb was shot down during the confrontation, marking the end of his heroic stand. The fall of Timbuktu to the Voulet-Chanoine Mission was a significant moment in the history of the Scramble for Africa, and Colonel Klobb's courageous defense of the city has since become a symbol of resistance against European colonialism. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex and often violent history of European colonialism in Africa, and the brave individuals who fought to preserve their cultures and sovereignty in the face of overwhelming odds.
