This evocative image brings to life the description given by the legendary Venetian traveler Marco Polo of the magnificent fleet of Kublai Khan, the Mongol Emperor of China, as it sailed through the Indian Archipelago around 1280. The historical account penned by Polo, who spent 17 years in China during Kublai Khan's reign, is a testament to the grandeur and power of the Mongol Empire at its zenith. The fleet, depicted in the print, was a marvel of naval engineering and logistical organization. With hundreds of ships, it was said to have carried thousands of soldiers, merchants, and artisans, as well as elephants, horses, and other livestock. The ships ranged in size, from small, swift vessels manned by a few sailors, to large, heavily-armed warships with multiple masts and hundreds of oarsmen. As Kublai Khan's fleet sailed through the Indian Archipelago, it left a lasting impression on the local populations.
