Dated between 1750 and 1809, this image offers a rare glimpse into the personal life of one of the most influential intellectual figures of the late Enlightenment and Romantic periods. Born in Ludwigsburg, Germany, Caroline Herder was the daughter of a prominent court official. She married Hölderlin in 1797, and their union is believed to have been a source of inspiration for many of his most famous works.
