EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph, taken in 1924, captures a pivotal moment from Act Four of Arrigo Boito's opera "Nerone," as performed by the Magdeburg Opera House in Germany. In the image, the Roman Emperor Nero, portrayed by tenor Boito Nerone Liebig, stands in the entrance of the circus, surrounded by his soldiers. The ominous setting of the circus, with its arches and columns, adds to the sense of tension and unease. Nero's expression is one of shock and disbelief as he learns of Simon Magus' plot to escape Rome by setting fire to the city. Simon Magus, a magician and religious figure, had been a guest at Nero's court but had grown disillusioned with the emperor and sought to overthrow him. The historical significance of this scene is not to be understated. The Great Fire of Rome, which Nero is famously rumored to have started to distract the population from the burning of Christ's temple in Jerusalem, is a pivotal moment in Roman history. Boito's opera, first performed in 1891, is a dramatic retelling of this story, with Nero as the central character. The photograph, taken during a performance of the opera by the Magdeburg Opera House, captures the intensity and drama of the scene, with Liebig's powerful performance as Nero bringing the character to life. The image is a testament to the enduring power of opera to transport us to another time and place, and to explore the complexities of human nature and history.
