This evocative print depicts the Battle of Befort, a minor yet significant engagement during Napoleon Bonaparte's Hundred Days advance in April 1815. The Napoleonic Wars, which spanned from 1803 to 1815, were a series of major European conflicts that shaped the political landscape of the continent. The final campaign, known as the Hundred Days, began when Napoleon escaped from exile in Elba and returned to France, rallying his troops and regaining power. The Battle of Befort took place on April 26, 1815, as part of the larger Battle of Mont-Saint-Jean. The Prussian forces, led by General Blücher, were advancing towards Wavre to cut off the French army's retreat from the main battlefield. The French, under the command of Marshal Reille, held the strategic heights of the Befort Ridge, determined to delay the Prussian advance. The print captures the intensity and chaos of the battle, with soldiers from both sides locked in fierce combat. Cannon fire illuminates the sky, and the smoke from the gunpowder obscures the battlefield. The Prussian infantry, seen in the foreground, charge forward, while the French cavalry, in the background, prepare to counterattack.
