EDITORS COMMENTS
"This historic photograph captures the moment of takeoff for an American B-25 Mitchell medium bomber from the USS Hornet aircraft carrier on April 18, 1942. The B-25, one of sixteen bombers under the command of Lt.-Colonel Jimmy Doolittle, was part of a daring mission that marked the first American military attack on Japan during World War II. Launched from the carrier during Operation ALBACore, this air raid on Tokyo came as a surprise response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The B-25 Mitchell bomber, with its distinctive design and powerful engines, was a crucial asset in the U.S. military arsenal during the war. The aircraft's ability to fly long distances and carry a heavy bomb load made it an effective tool for striking strategic targets in enemy territory. The sixteen bombers, each manned by a crew of five, took off from the deck of the Hornet in a coordinated effort, marking a significant turning point in the war. The success of the mission boosted American morale and demonstrated the U.S. military's determination to strike back against Japan. This photograph is an important reminder of the courage and determination of the men and women who served in the U.S. military during World War II. It is a testament to their bravery and the innovative strategies that helped turn the tide of the war in the Pacific."
