This evocative photograph captures the poignant moment of the War Cross award ceremony held in Engineers Park, Sed Dur-Bahr, Turkey on the 16th of July 1915. During the First World War, the Dardanelles Campaign was a major military operation mounted by the Allied forces to secure a sea route to Russia through the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus. The campaign, however, turned into a long and costly stalemate, with both sides suffering heavy losses. In this image, we see a group of allied soldiers, their faces etched with a mix of relief, pride, and exhaustion, gathered around a makeshift stage. They are being honoured with the War Cross, an Ottoman Turkish decoration, for their bravery and service in the Dardanelles. The soldiers, clad in uniforms and helmets, stand at attention as Turkish officers pin the medals onto their chests.
