EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the intense gaze and impassioned oratory of Antoine Barnave, a leading figure in the early years of the French Revolution. Barnave (1747-1793) was a prominent politician, journalist, and philosopher, known for his eloquent speeches in defense of constitutional monarchy and the rights of the Third Estate. Born in Grenoble, Barnave began his political career as a member of the Parlement of Dauphiné, where he advocated for the rights of the nobility while also expressing sympathy for the grievances of the common people. In 1789, he was elected to the Estates-General, the assembly that marked the beginning of the Revolution. There, he emerged as a vocal advocate for a constitutional monarchy and the establishment of a National Assembly. Despite his initial support for the Revolution, Barnave's political views evolved over time, and he became increasingly critical of the radical elements that came to dominate the National Assembly. In 1791, he was expelled from the National Assembly for his opposition to the new constitution, which abolished the monarchy and established the First French Republic. Barnave continued to speak out against the excesses of the Revolution, but his views were increasingly out of step with the prevailing sentiment. In 1793, he was arrested and executed during the Reign of Terror. This print, produced by Mary Evans Prints Online, captures the intensity and passion of Barnave's oratory style, which made him a powerful force in the early years of the French Revolution. Despite his ultimately tragic fate, Barnave remains an important figure in the history of the Revolution, and this print serves as a poignant reminder of his enduring legacy.
