EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the groundbreaking moment when American dentist, William Thomas Green Morton, successfully administered sulphuric ether as an anesthetic to a patient during a dental procedure at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, on October 16, 1846. Morton, who is depicted in the image wearing a top hat and holding a glass container, had been experimenting with various forms of anesthesia for several years. His discovery of the effectiveness of sulphuric ether, which was previously used as a surgical disinfectant, revolutionized dentistry and medicine as a whole. The patient, Dr. Warren, is shown lying on the dental chair with his mouth open, while Morton holds a cloth soaked in ether over his face. The expression on Dr. Warren's face suggests that he is already feeling the effects of the anesthetic, as his eyes are closed and his body is relaxed. The other men in the room, including the dentist assisting Morton, appear to be in a state of awe and excitement at the success of this new medical breakthrough. The use of anesthesia during dental procedures had been a long-standing challenge, as patients often endured immense pain and discomfort during even the most routine procedures. Morton's discovery of the anesthetic properties of sulphuric ether changed all that, allowing dentists to perform their work more effectively and humanely. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of Morton, and the significant impact his discovery had on the field of medicine.
