This historic photograph captures the groundbreaking moment when American dentist, William Thomas Green Morton, successfully administered sulphuric ether as an anesthetic to a patient during a dental procedure at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, on October 16, 1846. Morton, who is depicted in the image wearing a top hat and holding a glass container, had been experimenting with various forms of anesthesia for several years. His discovery of the effectiveness of sulphuric ether, which was previously used as a surgical disinfectant, revolutionized dentistry and medicine as a whole. The patient, Dr. Warren, is shown lying on the dental chair with his mouth open, while Morton holds a cloth soaked in ether over his face.
