Alexei of Russia during wartime

Tsesarevich Alexei Nikolaievich of Russia (1904-1918) in field uniform. While other Royal children performed small engagements or were photographed to raise money for war charities, Alexei actually went to headquarters with his father, Tsar Nicholas II, and made several tours of the front line. Alexei was fascinated by all he saw and spoke naturally with the men; they in turn were curious to see him and his presence made a deep impression - though concern for his health (he was a haemophiliac) was a concern for his father. A bright boy, with a strong character, Alexei was tragically assassinated by Bolsheviks, along with the rest of the Imperial family on 17th July 1918 at Ekaterinburg

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Tsesarevich Alexei Nikolaievich of Russia (1904-1918) during wartime, dressed in a field uniform as he accompanied his father, Tsar Nicholas II, to military headquarters and the front lines. Unlike other royal children who performed small engagements or were photographed to raise money for war charities, Alexei's fascination with the military and natural ability to connect with soldiers made a deep impression. The men were curious to see the young heir to the throne and his presence brought a sense of hope and morale to the troops. However, concerns for Alexei's health, as he was a haemophiliac, weighed heavily on his father's mind. Despite the risks, Alexei's bright character and strong spirit shone through as he made several tours of the front line, observing the soldiers and speaking with them in a natural and unaffected manner. This image, taken around 1916, captures a moment in history when the future Tsar was still alive and playing an active role in the Russian war effort. Tragically, Alexei and the entire Imperial family were assassinated by the Bolsheviks on 17th July 1918 at Ekaterinburg, ending the Romanov dynasty and leaving a deep mark on Russian history. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a time when the Russian royal family was still intact and the young Tsesarevich was a symbol of hope and courage on the battlefield.
