Fog Battery, Lundy Island DP196574

Fog Battery, Acklands Moor, Lundy Island, Devon. The fog signal station, constructed by Trinity House in 1863 when the limitations of the Old Lighthouse (constructed 1819-20), when thick fog covered the island, were recognised. It was constructed of dressed, roughly-coursed granite, with 2ft high walls and a corrugated iron roof bound with iron hoops. In the event of accidental explosion, this construction would allow the force to be taken by the roof rather than the walls. The idea of the battery was to warn shipping off the rocks by means of ten-minute interval firings with an eighteen pound canon. View from south east

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Fog Battery on Lundy Island, Devon. Constructed by Trinity House in 1863, this fog signal station was a crucial addition to the island when it became evident that the Old Lighthouse was insufficient during thick fog. The battery is made of meticulously dressed granite with roughly-coursed walls standing at 2 feet high. Its corrugated iron roof, bound with sturdy iron hoops, was designed to absorb any accidental explosion force and protect the surrounding structure. The purpose of this battery was to warn passing ships of the treacherous rocks nearby through ten-minute interval firings using an eighteen-pound cannon. Positioned strategically on Acklands Moor, this vantage point provided a clear view from the southeast. Photographer James O. Davies beautifully captures both the historical significance and architectural details of this Victorian-era structure. The image adds a timeless quality to the scene, emphasizing its enduring presence amidst changing times. As we gaze upon this photo print, we are transported back in time to an era where maritime safety relied heavily on such structures dotting our coastlines. It serves as a reminder of our rich history and how innovation has shaped our world today.
