EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring sight of an Air France Boeing 747 just moments before its graceful landing at Orly's airport on February 8,1970. The image takes us back to a significant moment in aviation history when this iconic aircraft was still relatively new to the skies. The story of the Boeing 747 began with its grand unveiling on September 30,1968, at the Everett assembly building. Representatives from an impressive lineup of 26 airlines that had eagerly ordered this groundbreaking plane were present alongside members of the press. It wasn't until February 9,1969, that the first flight took place, marking a milestone for both Boeing and commercial aviation as a whole. Dubbed "Jumbo Jet" due to its immense size and capacity, the Boeing 747 made its official debut in service on January 21,1970. Pan Am proudly operated it on their prestigious New York-London route. This photograph beautifully showcases the sheer power and elegance of this engineering marvel as it soars through the air above a motorway below. With incredible attention to detail and expert composition by Agence France-Presse (AFP), this illustration offers viewers a glimpse into an era where air travel was rapidly evolving and capturing imaginations worldwide.
