William Ewart Gladstone Collection

William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) was a British statesman and four-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He was born in Liverpool, England, to an affluent family and educated at Oxford University. After a successful career as a lawyer, he entered politics in 1832 as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Newark. He later switched to the Liberal Party and served as Prime Minister from 1868 to 1874, 1880 to 1886, February to July 1886 and 1892 to 1894. During his time in office he introduced numerous reforms such as the Third Reform Act which extended voting rights for men over 21 years old; the Education Act which established free elementary education; and the Irish Land Act which sought to improve conditions for tenant farmers in Ireland. His political career spanned almost sixty years during which he earned himself the nickname 'The Grand Old Man' due his dedication and commitment towards improving social justice throughout Britain.
