The village has a population of around 4,000 people and it lies on the edge Bay and has a long history dating back to at least Saxon times when it was known as Hyrnan or Hyrningas. The area was once home to an Iron Age hill fort and there are still remains from this period visible today, and is known for its links with smuggling during the 18th century and its connection with Charles Dickens who wrote about his visits to Herne in his book "The Pickwick Papers".
