Austria is a federal republic located in Central Europe, and is bordered by Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia and Italy. The Austrian political system is based on the Federal Constitution of 1920 and consists of nine federal states. The head of state is the President who is elected every six years by direct popular vote. The legislative power rests with the two chambers of Parliament: the National Council (Nationalrat) and Federal Council (Bundesrat). Austria has a multi-party system with several major parties including Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and Greens. Austria has been a member of the European Union since 1995 and participates in its single market as well as in other EU policies such as Schengen Area or Eurozone.
