EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of determination and courage as American aviator, Lincoln Ellsworth (1880-1953), prepares for takeoff in his Northrop aircraft, during his historic Arctic expedition in 1951. Ellsworth, a pioneer in polar exploration, is renowned for his daring flights over the icy expanses of the Arctic. His passion for aviation and exploration led him to become one of the first individuals to fly over the North and South Poles. Born in San Francisco in 1880, Ellsworth's adventurous spirit was ignited at an early age. He began his aviation career in 1910, learning to fly in a Wright biplane. Over the next few decades, he set numerous records for long-distance flights and became a respected figure in the aviation world. However, it was his Arctic explorations that truly cemented his place in history. In 1935, he made the first successful trans-Arctic flight from Alaska to Europe, along with his navigator, Hansjoerg Wyss. This groundbreaking achievement opened up new possibilities for polar exploration and paved the way for future expeditions. In this photograph, Ellsworth stands confidently beside his Northrop aircraft, dressed in his flying gear, with the icy Arctic landscape stretching out behind him. The Northrop was a custom-built aircraft designed specifically for polar exploration, with features such as skis for landing on snow and ice, and a powerful engine to withstand the extreme conditions. As Ellsworth climbs into the cockpit, the excitement and anticipation of the upcoming journey is palpable. With the roar of the engine and the crisp Arctic air, this moment represents the spirit of adventure and the relentless pursuit of knowledge that characterized Ellsworth's extraordinary life. This photograph is a testament to his unwavering determination and his place as a pioneer in both aviation and polar exploration history.
