EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting print captures the momentous occasion of the wedding day of the future King Edward VII and Princess Alexandra of Denmark, on March 10, 1863. Edward, then the Prince of Wales, is depicted in his regal attire, adorned with the insignia of the Order of the Garter, as he serves his bride with a glass of wine during the wedding feast. By his side, a young Princess Alexandra, dressed in an elegant white gown with a long train, smiles radiantly at her new husband. The couple's union marked the end of an era, as Edward succeeded his mother, Queen Victoria, upon her death in 1901. Edward's playboy lifestyle and reputation for extravagance were a stark contrast to his mother's long and dutiful reign. However, upon assuming the throne, he took on the responsibility of being a monarch seriously and proved to be an effective and popular ruler. The print, which dates back to 1863, is a testament to the historical significance of this royal wedding. It is an import from the renowned Danish engraver, R.W. Købke, and was published by I.N.L. in London in 1863. The image is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the lives of the royal family during a time of great change and transition. The future King Edward VII and Princess Alexandra's wedding was held at Windsor Castle, and their union was celebrated throughout the United Kingdom and Europe. Their daughter, Princess Victoria, who was born in 1868, went on to marry Prince Ludwig of Prussia in 1889, further strengthening the ties between the British and German royal families. This print is a beautiful and intriguing reminder of the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy.
