EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic moment captured in the early 1850s, Pope Pius IX (1792-1878) makes his triumphant return to Italy after the French army successfully rescued Rome from the clutches of the Roman Republic. The papal states had been under siege since 1848, when the Roman Republic was established following the revolutions that swept across Europe. The new government, however, was met with resistance from the Catholic population, who saw it as a threat to their faith. The French intervention in 1850 marked a turning point in the conflict. The French troops marched on Rome, and on February 27, 1851, Pius IX was able to make his way back to Italy, first landing in Naples. The scene depicted in this photograph shows the jubilant welcome he received upon his arrival. The pious citizens of Naples, overjoyed at the return of their spiritual leader, fall to their knees in reverence and devotion. The event marked the end of the Roman Republic and the restoration of the papal states. Pius IX's return was a significant moment in Italian history, as it signaled the beginning of a new era of papal rule that would last until 1870, when the Italian unification process led to the capture of Rome and the end of the papal states. This photograph, taken from the extensive collection of historical images at Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in Italian and papal history. It serves as a reminder of the deep emotional connection between the Italian people and their religious leaders, as well as the complex political dynamics that shaped the Italian peninsula during the 19th century.
