EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the picturesque Mousehole harbour in Cornwall, captured around 1925. The boat registrations PZ193, PZ591,413PZ, and PZ460 add a touch of authenticity to this historic scene. Preserved on a glass lantern slide from Major Arthur William Gill's lecture titled "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots" this image is a testament to his passion for photography and love for his homeland. Major Gill was renowned throughout Cornwall and beyond during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of both still photographs and cine films. His expertise in capturing the essence of Cornwall's natural beauty made him a sought-after speaker at prestigious institutions such as The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society. What sets Major Gill's work apart is not only his prolific use of quarter plate slides but also his artistic flair. Many of these slides were painstakingly hand-painted by Major Gill himself, resulting in stunning color renditions that brought each scene to life with remarkable effect. This particular photograph transports us back in time to witness Mousehole harbour as it appeared nearly a century ago. It serves as an invaluable glimpse into the rich maritime history that has shaped this charming coastal village over generations. As we admire this piece from the Royal Cornwall Museum collection, let us appreciate both its historical significance and Major Arthur William Gill's dedication to preserving Cornish beauty through his lens.
