EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the renowned French writer Voltaire, born François-Marie Arouet, in the tranquil setting of Ferney, on the auspicious date of 4 July 1775. Voltaire is seen in the company of three distinguished individuals: Mme Denis, M de Laborde, and M Adam. The serene atmosphere is further accentuated by the presence of elegant chairs and a decorative table adorned with fine crockery. Voltaire, who had retired to Ferney in 1759, was known for his wit, satire, and advocacy for religious tolerance. However, his reaction to this particular depiction of him was far from positive. The print, which shows him in a relaxed pose with his companions, was apparently unflattering to the great writer. Despite his displeasure, the image offers a glimpse into the private life of one of history's most influential figures. Mme Denis, a close friend and confidante of Voltaire, is seated to his right, her expression thoughtful and attentive. M de Laborde, a French diplomat, is positioned to Voltaire's left, while M Adam, a well-known painter, sits across from Voltaire. The grouping suggests a convivial gathering, with the four individuals engaged in animated conversation. The print, though unflattering to Voltaire, offers a valuable window into the world of the French literary and artistic elite during the late 18th century. The intricately detailed chairs, the delicate crockery, and the refined table setting all serve to underscore the sophistication and elegance of the era.
