This evocative print captures the moment when Polish lancers, serving in the French army under the command of Marshal Nicolas Charles Oudinot, accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte as he made his triumphant return to Paris from Elba in March 1815. The image, created in the aftermath of the Hundred Days War, depicts the Polish riders in their distinctive uniforms, complete with the distinctive crest of the White Eagle, a symbol of the Polish nation. Napoleon's return from Elba marked the beginning of the final chapter in the Napoleonic Wars, a period of intense military conflict that would ultimately see the end of the French emperor's reign.
