Born on January 6, 1832, in Dublin, Ireland, Roberts joined the British Army in 1848 and served in India for over three decades. He rose through the ranks, earning a reputation as a skilled military leader and an expert in Indian affairs. In 1880, Roberts led the British forces to a decisive victory against the Afghan resistance in the Second Afghan War, securing the British presence in Afghanistan and cementing his place in military history. In 1899, Roberts was called upon to lead the British forces in the Second Boer War in South Africa. His innovative military tactics and strategic brilliance led to a series of victories, culminating in the capture of the Boer capital, Pretoria, in June 1900. Roberts' victories in South Africa earned him the title "The Greatest Soldier of the Queen," and he was granted a peerage in the British House of Lords.
