Lee, the once formidable commander of the Confederate Army, bows before his Union counterpart, General Ulysses S. Grant. The historic event took place in the parlor of Wilmer McLean's house, which had inadvertently become the site of momentous significance as it was where the first battle of the American Civil War, the First Battle of Bull Run, had been fought only two years prior.
