EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the French pre-dreadnought warship Jaureguiberry anchored in the waters of the Dardanelles during the First World War. Launched in 1893, the Jaureguiberry was named after the renowned French Admiral Jaureguiberry and was one of the most formidable warships of its time. With its distinctive funnels and imposing gun turrets, the Jaureguiberry was a symbol of French naval power and played a significant role in the Gallipoli campaign of 1915. In the background of the photograph, a much smaller hospital ship can be seen. This underlines the harsh realities of war, with wounded soldiers being transported to the safety of medical care. The Jaureguiberry, like many other warships of the era, served multiple roles during the conflict, including as a school ship for Navy Mechanics. The Dardanelles, a strategically important waterway connecting the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, was a major battleground during the First World War. The failed Allied attempt to seize control of the Dardanelles and Constantinople in 1915 resulted in heavy losses for the Allied forces, including the Jaureguiberry. The Jaureguiberry saw its final days in 1920 when it was struck from the naval register and was eventually broken up in 1934. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the history and legacy of this once mighty warship and the sacrifices made during the First World War.
