EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, taken from Charles d'Orbigny's "Universal Dictionary of Natural History" published in 1849, showcases a vibrant and intricately detailed collection of different types of colorful sea urchins and their distinctive spines. Sea urchins are marine creatures belonging to the class Echinoidea, characterized by their spiky, globular bodies and unique ambulacral system. The sea urchins depicted in this engraving include the Echinus atratus, with its dark purple-black coloration and rounded shape, and the Toxopneustes globiformis, which boasts a more globular form and is covered in short, club-shaped spines. The Cidarites, represented here by the Cidarites imperialis, exhibit a more elongated shape and possess long, radiating spines. Another sea urchin featured is the Echinomora quinquefora, which can be identified by its quintet of ambulacral grooves and the five radiating rows of spines. The Echinometra scutella, with its orange-brown coloration and radial symmetry, is also illustrated. The engraving further highlights the diverse range of sea urchin spines, from the long, thin spines of the Cidarites, to the short, club-shaped spines of the Echinus and Toxopneustes, and the more complex, radiating spines of the Echinometra and Echinomora. Sea urchins and their spines play essential roles in various marine ecosystems, serving as both predators and prey, and contributing to the intricate balance of the marine food web. This historical and beautifully handcolored engraving not only showcases the captivating beauty of these marine creatures but also provides a valuable record of the natural history of sea urchins, highlighting their diverse forms and adaptations.
